What Can You Expect in the Emergency Department?

You've evaluated you wound and determined that it exhibits one or more of the Wound Warning Signs. Your doctor's office is closed, so you're headed to the Emergency Department. What can you expect there?

Most likely, a nurse will determine the severity of the wound and check your vital signs, including temperature, heart rate and blood pressure. This process is called triage. Additional information will also be obtained, such as your name, address and medical history, and someone will prepare a chart. If you have a traumatic wound that requires sutures, you will be treated in a timely manner.

You also may be asked about any allergies you have or any medications you are taking. Bring up-to-date medical records with you.

Once you are placed in an examination area, an emergency physician will examine you and treat the wound. Nurses and other assistants will also assist you during your visit.

You will be given instructions for caring for the wound during the healing process and then be on your way.

FAST AID FIRST is made possible by an educational grant from ETHICON, INC., a Johnson & Johnson company.
